To judge from the figures presented in the 2024 review of Maryland Department of Disabilities’ Technical Assistance Program (MDTAP) there’s not much knowledge within the state of the program itself or any of its projects.
MDTAP has provided the Assistive Technology Financial Loan Program (ATLP) to Marylanders with disabilities for close to 35 years now but in 2024 only 86 applications were made (72 were approved, and 50 loans were issued).
The ATLP is open to state residents who have disabilities to provide low-interest loans to cover a plethora of assistive technology devices that can help them live more productive and full lives. There doesn’t seem to be a cap on what devices might be included but examples include Home modifications; adapted and non-adapted vehicles; scooters and wheelchairs; braille equipment; and hearing and vision aids.
In theory, at least, you can get a loan up to $70,000 although you will need to have a fairly decent credit score to secure that kind of a loan. However, we are assured that the ATLP is less stringent than regular bank loans, which, coupled with the below market rate interest rates, is quite the selling point for the program.
