The Social Security Administration recently issues some updates on the schedule of the much sought-after Economic Impact Payments that have begun to be issued around the country. These updates concern recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Social Security retirement and survivors benefits who did not file taxes in 2018 or 2019.
All the above beneficiaries were not required to do anything to receive the $1,200 payment. Those with SSI who has direct deposit or uses Direct Express should expect to have had that payment issued by May 13. Paper checks will begin to be issued on May 15.
The $500 extra payments for SSI beneficiaries in this situation who also have qualifying children are also being paid at the same time as long as you used the IRS’ “Non Filer: Enter Payment Here” tool by May 5. It should be noted that if you use Direct Express you’ll get the payments to a bank account you listed or you’ll get the paper check if you didn’t record a bank account. If you missed that May 5 deadline you’ll have to wait to file a 2020 tax return to get that $500 although you’ll still get the $1,200 this month.
For those who receive other Social Security benefits (and who didn’t file taxes in 2018 or 2019) you should have hopefully received your $1,200 payment with your April check. The deadline for filing for a qualifying child was April 22. If you did that you should have also received your $500 by now. If you missed the deadline you’ll have to wait to file taxes for 2020 and will get the $500 once that’s processed. Again, for those who haven’t listed a bank account with SSA, you’ll get a paper check in the mail.
Unfortunately for those beneficiaries who have representative payees there still hasn’t been a decision made on when you’ll get paid, although it is expected that you will get those payments eventually.
